10 Dec 2017
President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama, has on December 8, lit Botswana’s biggest Christmas tree at Railpark Mall to mark the festive season.
The 12-metre high and six-metre wide Christmas tree lightning spectacle was also attended by Vice President, Mr Mokgweetsi Masisi, and President Khama passed ceremonial event torch to him.
When he got on stage to light the Christmas tree, President Khama invited his Vice President to join him and remarked that Mr Masisi might be the one doing the honours next year.
“This is what we call on the job training,” he said, much to the amusement and chuckles of those in attendance.
President Khama has lit the tree for the past three years, and it was the fourth time in a row lighting it.
The Christmas tree lighting ceremony forms part of Limkokwing University’s heal the world outreach programme and its on its fifth year.
The event is meant to promote compassion and social awareness through campaigns and fundraising activities with the aim of helping to ease some of the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges.
As part of the initiative, the university celebrates by sharing and giving to the under-privileged members of the society, hence their end of the year charity projects such as the Christmas tree lighting ceremony.
This year’s selected groups were SOS, Gamodubu Child Care Trust and Childline Botswana who were given food hampers and snacks as well as skateboards.
Children also received toys and school bags.
Also in attendance was Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration, Mr Eric Molale. ENDS
