Judges allowances not part of salaries
07 Dec 2017
Judges of the High Court, who in terms of Section 99 (2) (c) of the Constitution of Botswana also form part of the composition of the Court of Appeal, are paid a sitting allowance of P6 722 per day on occasions they are invited to sit at the Court of Appeal.
Minister of Defence, Justice and Security, Mr Shaw Kgathi told Parliament that the payment was not part of their salaries and other allowances of the High Court.
He said the sitting allowance was made in terms of Section (2) (d) (ii) of the Judicial Services (Amendment) Act 2015 and further explained that the payment was made through the Electronic Funds Transfer mode of payment.
The minister was responding to a parliamentary question from Francistown East MP, Mr Buti Billy who asked the minister if there was any remuneration paid to High Court Judges who were invited to sit at the Court of Appeal besides their salaries and allowances as Judges of the High Court.
He also wanted to know how much they were paid and the method of payment. BOPA
