Appointments done with JSC advice

Appointments to the Court of Appeal are done by the President in accordance with the advice of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
The Minster of Defence, Justice and Security, Mr Shaw Kgathi said in the case of Justices of Appeal, when there was a vacancy, names were put forward to the JSC by the President of the Court of Appeal after consultation with the Chief Justice.
The minister, who was answering a question in Parliament on Tuesday, said after that records of the nominees were debated and that alternative names might be proposed.
He said the criteria considered included maturity, experience, quality of previous judgements, standing in the profession and in public life, health status and in case of retired judges, current activities as well as other personal and professional attributes considered by the JSC to be relevant.
Francistown East Member of Parliament, Mr Buti Billy had asked the minister to state the criteria used for the appointment of citizen High Court judges to the Court of Appeal.
Still in Parliament, the Minister of Employment, Labour Productivity and Skills Development, Mr Tshenolo Mabeo explained that the last labour inspection conducted at Livingstone Kolobeng College was on the 28 February 2017.
He said since the last inspection, no complaints were registered from employees, saying this was an indication that there had been some improvements.
Mr Mabeo said since the last inspection, two foreign teachers had been given work permits. He said one permit was valid until December 2019 while the other was valid until December 2018.
The minister said the process of conducting a labour inspection has three phases namely: separate interviews with employees, management and then a tripartite meeting involving employees, management and labour inspectors.
He said the process was followed in the labour inspection at Livingstone Kolobeng College.
MP Major General Pius Mokgware of Gabane-Mmankgodi had asked the minister if there were any improvements at Livingstone Kolobeng College since the last labour inspection as well as how many foreign teachers were given work permits since the last inspection.
He had also asked whether the inspection team addressed Batswana teachers and support staff to get information on how they were treated by the school leadership. ENDS
