Police call for collaboration in fight against crime

05 Dec 2017

Kweneng District No 11 Superintendent Modise Gabatshwane has appealed to members of the community in Kweneng to join forces and fight against crime.

He said this in an interview following councillors comments and concerns during the Kweneng District Council meeting regarding the high rate of crime in the area.

He said as law enforcement officers they need assistance from members of the community and their leaders. “We are at a point where we are humbly and respectfully appealing to the community together with their leaders to get on board and help us fight crime. We have so many strategies in place to help reduce crime and these strategies need leaders to help sensitise the community about them,” he said.

He said there was a gap between the police and the community and that the gap gave perpetrators a chance to commit crime and possibly get away with it.

During the official opening of the council meeting in Molepolole recently, council chairperson, Mr Jeffery Sibisibi said Thamaga and Molepolole were the two villages leading with high crime rates.

He said statistics showed a lot of aggressive crime where people were raped, murdered, brutally assaulted and robbed. The other factor was that of alarming growth in teenage delinquency in the two villages.

As part of efforts to reduce crimes that were committed Supt Gabatshwane said they have cluster officers patrolling with law enforcing officers. For all these to be possible he said they needed support and partnerships and participation from leaders and communities.

Councillor Pulane Piet of Thamaga East said it appeared the police did not have enough resources to control the crime rate. He suggested that the police be reinforce with Special Support Group officers in the two villages especially during the festive season.

Cllr Tshenolo Leshomo called for government to upgrade Molepolole Police Station, stating that it should be well equipped in terms of police offers and vehicles. Ends
