MPs praise Khama

Member of Parliament for Sefhare-Ramokgonami, Ms Dorcas Makgato has praised President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama for fulfilling and delivering the 5Ds that he laid when he assumed office.

Contributing to the State-of-the-Nation Address in Parliament on Monday, she said it was during President Khama’s tenure that the less privileged were built decent shelter and the eradication of abject poverty were embarked upon, adding that he has also promised a seamless transition to power thereby honouring the ‘D’ for democracy.

She said a number of tourism investments also came into effect during President Khama’s tenure because of his sound tourism policies that empowered and created employment opportunities for Batswana.

Ms Makgato said she was thankful for developments in her constituency that included the construction of Letoreng Primary School and the resuscitation of Sefhare Clinic.

She called on government to consider easing congestion in schools in her constituency.

She also called for the  construction of a technical school at Chadibe  as well as water supply improvements.

She said she supported the motion that calls for sexual predators and offenders registry and a ban of sexual abuse offenders from working in institutions dealing with children.

“As women, we want o comprehensively study Gender Based Violence and we want the death penalty imposed for sexual predators and no bail conditions for them,” she said.

MP for Chobe, Mr Machana Shamukuni also praised President Khama’s support for the creative arts industry.

He thanked government for developments in his constituency that include the airport and Kazungula Bridge.

However, Mr Shamukuni also called on government to provide portable water in his constituency.

MP for Thamaga-Kumakwane, Mr Tshenolo Mabeo commended President Khama for reaching out to people in the remotest areas and unearthing tourism sites such as the Qwihaba Caves.

Regarding developments in his constituency, Mr Mabeo said he was looking forward to the construction of the Kubung road as an artery to the farming community in his constituency, the upgrading of Thamaga Primary Hospital and the construction of a senior secondary school in Thamaga.

MP for Lerala-Maunatlala, Mr Prince Maele said President Khama’s speeh covered all sectors of the economy. He said it was during his tenure that there was exemption of medical fares for pensioners and availability of ARVs in remote areas.

He said developments such as SHHA, youth housing, instalment purchase scheme and the ease of doing business were also part of the legacy that President Khama should be remembered for.

MP for Goodhope-Mabule, Kgosi Lotlamoreng called on government to provide basic amenities such as water and electricity, saying were lacking in some of the areas in his constituency.

He said Kgoro-Gathwane and Phitshane-Molopo and Mabule roads needed refurbishment as well as provision of housing for Good Hope police officers.

“We have long secured a plot for construction of houses for police officers in Goodhope,” he said.

Specially Elected MP, Dr Unity Dow said government has made strides in ensuring that there were sustainable communities.

She further praised government for eradication of abject poverty, adding that it was unlikely that a person could die from hunger in the country as compared to other countries.

“It is only under this government that under-fives are fed, there is free education and free health care,” she said. ENDS
Dr Dow said she valued the diligent work carried out by the justice system.
She called on government to strengthen the envisaged education and training strategic sector plan ETSSP that has been designed to transform education from pre-primary to tertiary level.
“I look forward to the improvements that will be brought forward by ETSSP that looks at multiple pathways in education,” she said.
