Palapye in need of landfill - chairperson
21 Nov 2017
The mushrooming of shopping malls and other developments in Palapye calls for a landfill, says Palapye Administration Authority chairperson, Mr Lesedi Phuthego.
Addressing councillors during Palapye Sub-council meeting on November 20, Mr Phuthego said Palapye was currently grappling with refuse, adding that the dumping site at Mmalenakana was an eyesore.
“This is a crisis that needs immediate attention,” he said.
Mr Phuthego said council was experiencing serious financial constraints as such its budget was insufficient to construct a landfill or any development of that magnitude.
He said he would take up the issue with the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development as well as the Office of the President.
He said Palapye should not be operating with a dumping site, rather it needs a fully-fledged landfill.
Furthermore, he urged all council departments mandated with revenue collection to improve on this area to generate income for the council.
He urged them to come up with effective strategies to enhance revenue collection, urging them to collect at least 60 per cent of revenue.
He also implored councillors to ensure effective implementation of government programmes, in particular projects undertaken through the Economic Stimulus Programme.
He said with the introduction of the constituency fund of which several projects would be undertaken within the sub-district, councillors as community leaders should take the initiative to monitor projects undertaken in their respective wards.
Councillor Jordan Makhura of Morupule ward commended, Mr Phuthego for taking immediate action on issue of landfill.
He said the dumping site currently used in Palapye was an eyesore and putting the lives of the people at risk.
Mr Phuthego also welcomed the new Palapye deputy district commissioner, Mr Odiseng Moruti who took the baton from Mr Ernest Phiri.
Mr Odiseng vowed to work closely with councillors, senior assistant council secretary and the entire PAA leadership to develop the sub-district. Ends
