No plans for disability centre

19 Nov 2017

Parliament has been informed that there is no budget provision under the current development plans to construct a learning disability centre at Ledumang primary school due to financial constraints.

Answering a question in parliament on behalf of Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Assistant Minister of Agricultural Development and Food Security, Mr Kgotla Autlwetse explained that Ledumang primary school had a modified classroom and toilet to cater for students under the special education unit.

He said the current plans only provided for backlog eradication of classrooms, toilet blocks and teachers quarters.

Mr Autlwetse was answering Gaborone North MP, Mr Haskins Nkaigwa, who had asked if there were any plans to construct a learning disability centre at Ledumang primary school.

He also asked as to how learners were currently assisted at Ledumang primary school without such facilities.

Mr Nkaigwa further asked how much had been budgeted for provision of a learning disability centre and when would the project be undertaken.

Meanwhile, Mr Autlwetse also updated parliament that Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development will not increase the number of nominated councillors as per Section 25 of the Local Government Act.

“It grants a presiding member (chairperson) at any meeting of the council, an original vote and a casting vote, thereby eliminating possibilities of a stand-off,” said Mr Autlwetse.

MP for Nata-Gweta, Mr Polson Majaga had asked if the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development would consider increasing the number of nominated councillors in Sowa Township from eight to nine to facilitae the voting process during council sittings. BOPA
