Disclosure on police fleet bad move

13 Nov 2017

Minister of Defence, Justice and Security says information on the numbers and state of repair of vehicles in the Molepolole Police Station borders on the disclosure of operational capability.

Answering a question in Parliament from MP for Molepolole South, Dr Tlamelo Mmatli, Minister Shaw Kgathi therefore said he was constrained to such information.

However, he said shortage of transport was not  unique to Molepolole, but had affected most police stations countrywide.

Nevertheless, he said, in general there were  plans in place to deal with the challenge of shortage of transport for the Botswana Police on incremental basis through the normal budgeting process, coupled with using part of Traffic Fines Fund resources to purchase vehicles for the Botswana Police as a whole.

He said that the commissioner would decide on prioritised allocation acquired vehicles depending on a number of factors including the broadness of the operational area and crime statistics, among others.

Budget permitting,  Minister Kgathi said government would address shortage of transport for Molepolole Police Station alongside other police stations.

Dr Mmatli had asked the minister to state the number of vehicles assigned to Molepolole Police and how many of such  vehicles were currently serviceable and fully operational. He had wanted to know how shortage of vehicles impacted on delivery of police service and when the minster would address the problem of shortage of vehicles at Molepolole Police Station. BOPA
