BFA revives women football

After suspending women football activities in Gaborone, Botswana football governing body is now resurrecting the women league in the regions.
Women super league was only played in Gaborone, something which did not seat well with Botswana Football Association (BFA) leadership as they were of the view that like all football structures in the country, women football should cover all regions.
Tomorrow (November 11), Tswapong region will set the ball rolling by launching women football league in Palapye.
Participating teams are BIUST, Eyes on the ball and Seabird from Palapye, Letswapo Stars from Lerala, Majwaneng Girls from Majwaneng, Seven Stars from Sefhare, Lesenepole will be represented by Ground Kings while Lecheng will pin their hopes on the Shinning Girls to put their village on the football map.
However, BFA mouth piece, Tumo Mpatane said in an interview that they were kick starting the women football without a sponsor, adding they had communicated with the regions to run the league with their grants.
“We want the women league to get started in order for us to have a product that we can now put out to the commercial world or to the investors out there,” he said.
Furthermore, Mpatane said they were happy that Tswapong region would start this week-end, adding that other regions like Gaborone and Francistown will launch soon.
He said BFA was currently waiting for draft and final plans, from Nhabe,Selebi Phikwe and Ghanzi regions regarding their women football league.
“In a nut shell all the other regions have been challenged to bring forth their final fixtures and plans to ensure that at most we have majority of leagues starting in the next week or so,” he said.
Mpatane said he was cognisant that different regions would experience different problems, adding that what was paramount was that they needed the regions to start.
BFA, he said desired to ensure that football was accessible to women around the country.
According to Mpatane when they suspended women football their main aim was to align it to FIFA requirement which called for women football to be accessible to many women in different countries.
He said he was confident that taking it to the regions would give more women opportunity to play and access football, adding that alone would also create an opportunity for all talented women to practice what they knew best. ENDS
