GPH organises wellness day for Kumakwane elders

30 Oct 2017

Kumakwane elders were on Saturday treated to a health checkup for free by Gaborone Private Hospital.

The event turned successful as over 300 elders and a small number of youth were tested for various ailments.

Again about 17 elders got lucky and went home with reading glasses courtesy of Mercy Hand Foundation Trust.

Speaking at the event, MP for Thamaga/Kumakwane constituency Mr Tshenolo Mabeo commended the two organisations for remembering the communities they serve and appreciating that they existed because of them.

He also mentioned that being healthy did not only refer to the physical aspects of oneself but emotional wellbeing was critical for one to be considered healthy.

He has therefore thanked the GPH management for lessening the burden off government to make sure Batswana were well.

Mr Mabeo has also urged communities, young and old to know their health status from time to time so that they could be diagnosed and treated early emphasising that routine checkups were important.

The coordinator of the event from GPH Mr Glen Manyiwa said that GPH management cared a lot about the wellbeing of communities hence they went around the country doing basic health checks and tests for free.

Also, they choose a profile of tests according to a segment of people in the society and carry them out and advice accordingly.

For instance, in Kumakwane, since their target group was the elderly people, they tested them for non-communicable diseases such as High blood pressure and Diabetes as well as body mass index and offered medical therapy.

Ms Keleofe Modisang, 45, said  she was among the lucky people who received reading glasses and she was overly happy since she now can read.

She said that before, reading the Bible was impossible and she thanked Mercy Hand Foundation Trust for the glasses. Mr Makau Plaajie, 85, said that he was long diagnosed with BP and sugar Diabetes for quite a long time so he makes it a habit to do routine checkups now and again. BOPA
