Effective leadership prerequisite for service delivery

30 Oct 2017

Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism says effective leadership is a prerequisite ingredient in any thoughtful organization to get the best out of the employees.

Delivery a keynote address during the first Excellence and Distinguish Awards for the Department of Waste Management and Pollution Control (DWMPC) employees recently in Gaborone, Mr Jimmy Opelo said through sound leadership, organisations could ably deliver on their mandate.

He therefore said those charged with driving the mandate of the organisation should be accountable enough to know what was happening around them as well as the needs of their employees so that the two could pull in one direction and succeed in their mandate.

Mr Opelo hence said it was imperative that those who exceled during the course of their work should be recognised and rewarded accordingly, a move which would arguably energise them and create a healthy working atmosphere.

He also said for the organisation to thrive, they should emphasise and embark on team work.

In the meantime, Mr Opelo regretted that in many instances, some lazy and talkative employees were usually rewarded because they could maneuver around, while those who were hardworking, but were usually quite were over-looked, a trend which he said should be critically looked into as that was tantamount to cheating.

Meanwhile, 25 officers from the headquarters and three regional offices of Francistown, Selibe-Phikwe and Maun received the certificates of excellence and cash prize.

At least eight of the recipients got director’s special award.

According to the director of DWMPC ,Ms Oarabile Serumola, these employees were awarded for their exceptional extra ordinary delivery inside and outside duty.

She said this would encourage officers to work extra mile in both the department’s duties and other duties they were assigned to perform in conjunction with other sectors.
