Changes have been made in the movement protocol of all cloven hooved animals and their fresh products following the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in Namanyane crush, Sehithwa extension area and suspected outbreak of Anthrax in Mohembo area, zone 2a.
A press release from the Ministry of Agriculture Development and Food Security states that the movement of all cloven-hooved animals into the district is not permitted and fresh products are allowed with a movement permit in sealed containers/trucks.
It states that the movement of fresh products from animals that have undergone quarantining and have successfully undergone deboning and maturation in licensed facilities are allowed out of the Ngamiland district.
Movement of all Anthrax susceptible animals (cattle, sheep, goats and horses and wildlife) will not be allowed into, within and out of zone 2a.
It further states that movement of cloven-hooved animals out of zones 2b, 2c, and 2e to be allowed with a Veterinary movement permit directly for slaughter or to a quarantine and no trekking of animals between crushes or zones is allowed.
The movement of cattle done through electric permits only and movement of fresh products into zone 16 allowed with a permit.
The release says slaughter for social events such as weddings and funerals is allowed in the entire district, but the meat is to be consumed locally or otherwise it has to be cooked in order to be moved within the sub-zone.
Social slaughters permit will be issued following a favourable health inspection and provision of a letter from relevant authorities ascertaining the event
The public is therefore urged to exercise high level of caution to prevent spread of FMD around the district and the rest of the country. ENDS
