25 Oct 2017

Cycling enthusiasts and professionals painted Serowe in rainbow colours as they came in large numbers to join hands in support of the general manager’s annual charity cycle challenge which was held recently.

It was the 8th annual event organised by the Morupule Coal Mine cycling club with the view to improve the level of fitness and well-being of employees of the mine and surrounding communities.

It was also intended to raise funds to assist the less fortunate members of the community through various charitable initiatives.

Officiating at the prize giving ceremony, the general manager of Morupule Coal Mine, David Kgoboko affirmed their continued support in the social economic development of the community within which they operate.

“We have a firm conviction that we will continue giving back to the community in which we operate,” said Kgoboko, adding that “we pride ourselves in providing coal and delivering energy for the benefit of stakeholders in a sustainable manner.”

He added that it was through projects which they had done in the past that they were able give back to the community.

“We have delivered a number of projects in the past which have undoubtedly improved the lives of Batswana,” he said.

Kgoboko noted that their mission was aligned to that of government which was to participate and contribute to the social upliftment of the community.

Kgoboko extended his appreciation to the sponsors, which included support and conviction in supporting the fundamental lives of Batswana.

He extended his appreciation to the sponsors which included Stanbic Bank, JA Engineering, Asphalt Botswana, Sesiro Insurance, DPF and De Beers.

“The partnership that we have formed with yourselves have changed the lives of many,” he said.

Kgoboko also thanked the cyclist for the endurance which they displayed on the road,  noting that they did it for the good cause of uplifting the lives of disadvantaged people.

He appealed to those who did not participate to give it a try next year.

“Cycling is full of fun. It’s a bit of a mini holiday as it is full of adventure with the benefits that the sport brings with it. I, therefore, encourage others to try it next year,” he said.

In his welcome remarks, Kgosi Sediegeng Kgamane of Bangwato commended Morupule mine for their initiative in uplifting the lives of Batswana.

He said the event has shown growth over the year, as it also included riders from the surrounding villages.

Kgosi Sediegeng called on the local leadership to also participate in such activities as it also improved one’s health.

In the 110km elite category, Nkulumo Dube of Zimbabwe took first position in a time of 2:54:48 ahead of Amogelang Twabi’s while position three went to Oduetse Kgoboge in 3:09:16.

The cycling challenge included 30km, 60km and 110km distance and children’s 10km starting at the Boiteko Mall Junction in Serowe, down the A14 road past Paje and Khama Rhino Sanctuary before turning back to the starting point. ENDS
