Sankoyo dashes Sharps hopes

Sankoyo Bush Bucks dashed Sharps Shooting Club’s hopes of increasing their points in the BTC Premiership after beating them 1-0 in a game played at Maun Sports Complex on Saturday.

Sharps Shooting Stars had high hopes that they would collect maximum points in the game given that they were yet to win a single game since the start of the league, after managing a draw in their two games against Extension Gunners and BDF X1.

On the other hand, Sankoyo wanted to redeem their pride after losing their opening game against Galaxy and playing to a draw against Mochudi Centre Chiefs in their second game.

Therefore, Saturday’s encounter was crucial as they enjoyed home ground advantage, and this time the Ngurungu Boys did not disappoint their supporters who came in large numbers.

Although Sharps Shooting Stars had an upper hand as they enjoyed more ball possession in the first half, luck was not on their side as they created several clear scoring chances but failed to convert them.

However, Sankoyo came back rejuvenated in the second stanza as they visited their rivals’ goal posts time and again and pilling pressure, but their efforts were frustrated by Sharps solid defence as they blocked all balls directed to the goalkeeper, Raphael Nthwane.

In the 60th minute, hard work paid dividends for the hosts after Morris Ruzivo made a solo attack from the midfield and utilised the left wing. He put the all at the back of the net to put Sankonyo on the driving seat.

The game ended 1-0 and Sankoyo assistant coach, Gadimang Tiiso said in an interview that he was happy that his charges put a brave fight and collected three valuable points.

He said the game was tough and that they had to change their game plan and introduce Ruzivo to pile pressure. He added that he was happy that their substitute managed to score.

“My boys were not composed and they rushed to take decisions, hence we missed many chances to score more goals. We could have won with a big margin if my boys could have used the created chances well,” he added.

He said they had been struggling to win home matches and that they hoped their win would open doors for more victories.

Sharps assistant coach, Davis Kopi decried that they squandered many scoring opportunities, and that their opponents only had one chance and utilised it to win the game. He said his boys needed more power upfront as their strengths were in the wings.
“We played well but what let us down was our conversion,” he added. Ends
