29 Sep 2017

Five people were reported dead while six others sustained multiple severe wounds along the Molepolole/Serowe road when a 13-seater combi they were travelling in overturned near Kodibeleng on September 24.

According to Sojwe Police Station Commander, Superintendent Joubert Kome, the accident occurred between Otse and Kodibeleng in the Central District while transporting relatives home from a wedding in Bobonong.

The five deceased persons aged between 35 and 79, were four women and a man.

Two of the deceased hail from Lotlhakane West in Ngwaketse area while three were from Thamaga.

The injured victims were reportedly receiving treatment at Mahalapye Primary Hospital for severe multiple injuries sustained during the accident.

Superintendent Kome said a three year-old child and the 38-year-old driver who were treated for minor injuries and released the same day, were among the survivors.

He also said the driver might have had lost control of the vehicle after left rear tyre burst causing it to overturn.

Meanwhile Superintendent Kome could not be drawn into discussing whether the driver of the vehicle was likely to face charges, saying investigations were still at an infancy stage but did not rule out possibility of charges being laid at a later stage.

The Station Commander has however made emphasis over the need for drivers to be cautious when driving during hot weather.

The names of the five deceased persons are still withheld pending next of kin notifications. ENDS
