Water shortage affects students

07 Sep 2017

Shortage of water supply to schools in Pitshane is a major concern and has now become unhygienic to students.

Speaking  during a kgotla meeting addressed by Asistant Minister of Land Management, Water and Sanitation services, Mr Itumeleng Moipisi, Kgosi Tiego Leshomo said the situation had gotten worse to a point where students at both Montshioa junior secondary school and Maiphitlhwane primary school use the bush as toilets and this posed danger to their health.

He said the situation also affected public servants in the area hence some of them were not performing well because in most cases water was only available during the time when officers would be at work, a situation that forced them to leave work and collect water when it was avilable.

“Public servants cannot bring out results when they are experiencing water shortage,” he said.

He said even the community used the bush to relief themselves because of water shortage.

However, kgosi Leshomo applauded the Botswana Defence Force for always assisting the students. He said he suspected that people who were given the responsibility to supply water in the area were not supervised properly.

He also pleaded with the Water Utilities Corporation to announce in advance when water would not be available so as to alert the public.

Mr Moipisi noted that he was aware of the situation in the area, and thus the reason for visiting so as to update the community on what government and other relevant stakeholders were doing to better the situation.

He said currently they were working hand in hand with relevant authorities to make sure that the problem was addressed.

He promised the public that the water problem would be rectified, noting that the aim was to supply the community with water in every village in the country.BOPA
