WAIB to host girls in aviation day

07 Sep 2017

Women in Aviation Botswana (WAIB) will host the first Girls in Aviation Day on September 23 at Maun International Airport.

The day will be held under the theme, Empowering and Mentoring Women and Girls in Different Aviation Sectors and will contribute towards the promotion and mentorship of the girl-child in science, technology and innovation.

WAIB will host the event along with 100 other chapters all over the world and expects to have at least 50 girls from Maun and surrounding areas aged 8-18 years at the event.

Women in Aviation Botswana president, Ms Kaone Kamanakao stated that the organisation was a local chapter to Women in Aviation International (WAI) based in the United States of America and formally established in 1991.

She said WAI was a non-profit making organisation dedicated to encourage and advance women in aviation career fields and interests.

“Its diverse membership of more than 14 000 includes astronauts, corporate pilots, maintenance technicians, air traffic controllers, business owners, educators, journalists, flight attendants, high school and university students, air show performers and airport managers to name a few,” she said.

Ms Kamanakao said WAI chapters around the world would bring the passion, learning and excitement of aviation and aerospace to the people.

She asked the community to join in as they connect with other girls and women equally excited about aviation and explore opportunities for working in the aviation and aerospace industry.

WIAB was founded by a group of passionate young female aviators across the country to encourage, motivate and advance women and girls in different sectors of the aviation industry. Ends
