Muzila urges women to support each another

28 Aug 2017

Women have been urged to support each other and celebrate their success.

Welcoming stakeholders at a women empowerment seminar on Friday, the mayor of Francistown, Ms Sylvia Muzila said women were still faced with challenges that had troubled them for generations. She, therefore, argued that it made no sense for them to be pitting themselves against each other.

Ms Muzila also encouraged women to educate their girl children to be independent so that they could play a significant role in society. She said every woman would gain from supporting each other, adding that they could harness the collective energy from other women to help them feel less alone.

The regional chairperson of youth and gender from Botswana Public Employees Union (BOPEU) Ms Kefilwe Daniel, who was the guest speaker,  applauded the seminar for being held on the backdrop of Botswana having signed the SADC gender protocol in May 2017. She said the importance of the protocol could not be underscored enough as it was another pillar which could help build a nation anchored on gender equality and equity.

She further encouraged women to dispel notions that they were different and inferior, but to mark a new future which guaranteed equal and equitable access opportunity.

She also noted that when women were offered an opportunity they were not treated equally and equitable, saying they should take deliberate steps to remove the obstacles that hampered women. ENDS
