Kwerepe calls for cooperatives to grow businesses

27 Aug 2017

Poverty Eradication Programme beneficiaries in Okavango have been urged to form production syndicates or cooperatives for the betterment of their businesses.

Speaking at the Okavango Poverty Eradication Expo, Assistant Minister for Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration, Mr Thato Kwerepe said cooperatives would be an effective model to grow some businesses.

He said the different business skills brought together could help beneficiaries improve their productions as well as a better market.

He also said the businesses would have the potential to grow, adding that they want to see Botswana importing fewer goods from other countries.

The assistant minister also noted that government came up with the Poverty Eradication Programme in a bid to uplift the lives of marginalised members of society and instil dignity in every household.

Meanwhile, Okavango Sub-district deputy district commissioner, Mr Thabang Waloka said the expo followed the realisation that marketing products by poverty eradication beneficiaries was a challenge.

He added that the expo gave beneficiaries a platform to showcase and sell their products.

He also said the expo encouraged the development of competitive and sustainable business as well as bringing together small scale entrepreneurs to share ideas and skills.

Mr Waloka said they want to see beneficiaries of the Poverty Eradication Programme grow in terms of business.

He noted that most projects were operated from the backyard, and that it made it difficult for them to be recognised.

He added that the expo would give them exposure.

Different projects such as basketry, small stock, fishery, bakery, sewing, carpentry and backyard garden among others were showcased at the expo.

The Okavango Poverty Eradication expo was competitive and those who had impressed would compete at the national level in October.
