Minister admits textbooks shortage

Assistant Minister of Basic Education Mr Moiseraela Goya has admitted that there is shortage of text books at Letlhakane Senior Secondary School.

He said this when responding to a question in Parliament that the availability of text books is 48.9 per cent of the requirement or half of what the school needs.

Mr Goya said the text books were from the prescription lists published from time to time by the ministry and are relevant to the Botswana General Certificate Secondary Education (BGCSE) course.

He said Letlhakane Senior Secondary School is connected to Wi-Fi and as such learners have access to 100 per cent of reference material on-line.

Mr Goya said it is not true that books that were re-distributed from other schools were irrelevant text adding that during the exercise, irrelevant text were removed from circulation.

MP for Boteti East Mr Setlhomo Lelatisitswe had asked the minister if it was true that there is critical shortage of text or reference books at Letlhakane Secondary School and if so, to state the number of text or reference books against the number of students per subject for Form 4 and 5s.

He also asked whether the said text books were relevant to the current syllabus used in secondary were no longer relevant to the current syllabus. ENDS
