 Residents of Molepolole and surrounding areas have been urged to unite in the war against crime.

Speaking after a crime prevention sponsored walk organised by Kagisong Society at Lekgwapheng ward in Molepoloe last weekend, the chairperson of Diabetes Association of Botswana and pediatric endocrinologist at Princess Marina Hospital, Dr Dipesalema Joel pleaded with the community to imitate the initiatives of Kagisong Society.

He stressed that being united against crime and making Molepolole a safe place for women, children and visitors should be a priority for residents, and said it was without doubt that one of the society’s greatest ills was crime which always put lives and property in danger.

Dr Joel said crime was a form of social deviance with negative consequences for peace, stability and economic aspiration.

He said the sponsored walk was made to encourage positive interactions which were premised on core traditional values of Botho as well as raise awareness to safeguard against these social ills.

“Our forefathers have taught us the spirit of togetherness as people, therefore we must not only know our neighbours, but love, support and be mindful of their properties in their absence,” he said.

He applauded residents of Lephaleng where the Kagisong Society neighbourhood watch programme was formed for their effort in fighting crime and developing their locality, indicating that it has become a role model of how communities should be organised.

He said the efforts of Kagisong Society deserved to be commended as government alone could not manage and needed to be complemented by the community.

He said it was important that young people were also included in the fight against crime as future leaders.

“I therefore call upon other localities in Molepolole to emulate Kagisong Society by engaging in activities which will develop this village and tackle the social ills that afflict us,” he said. ENDS
