Tutume based businessman, Wachila Khani of Dominic Studios Investments recently hosted a road safety show for cyclists in Tutume and surrounding villages.
The show was combined with a health awareness activity for the community of Tutume.
In an interview after the event, Khani said he organised the event after realising that although a majority of the community use bicycles as a mode of transport, they often did not adhere to proper use of the road for cyclists.
He said in many instances cyclists were involved in fatal road accidents.
Khani, a beneficiary of the youth development fund with a Internet café, office apartment for rentals, is also a role model to other inspiring young business people.
He decided to do an awareness activity with stakeholders such as the Department of Transport and Road Safety to sensitise cyclists on the best practices of cycling on the roads and also organised a bicycle race as part of the event.
His aim is to host in two more villages within Nkange constituency having started in Tutume. The next one will be in Maitengwe followed by Nswazwi, he said, noting that the top three winners would participate in a major event planned for December.
Khani said they had a low number of people that registered for the competition having about 15 participants which included one female participant, 56-year-old Chikadzi Morapedi with her Hamba biclycle.
The 15 kilometre race was won by self-employed Gosiame Baikepi in a time of 25 minutes and walked away with P500 prize money. The runner ups got P250 and P100 respectively.
Khani said being the first of its kind, he was privileged to have the support of the government.
He appreciated all the stakeholders and government departments for the job that they were doing in the region.
He also said as a youth he was also encouraging others to partake in government initiatives through the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development. ENDS
