27 Jul 2017

Seventh Day Adventist Church (SDA) has donated food hampers and toiletries worth over P 4 500 to five needy families in Kang.

Speaking at the handing over recently, South Botswana Conference president of SDA church, Dr Boitirelo Kabo said a church forms part of the community, therefore, it was befitting for them to bring services closer to the community members.

Dr Kabo said their role as a church, was not only based on spiritual teachings, but also extended to philanthropic activities, marriage counselling and health issues.

On that note, he said as a church, they were concerned about the escalating cases of chronic diseases that could be reduced and prevented.

Despite intensive health information dissemination, he said it was surprising that people still get affected even though they had been taught about healthy lifestyle.

He encouraged people to adopt healthy eating habits and also undertake regular check-ups on high blood pressure, sugar diabetes and others to reduce the chances of getting affected or get treatment on time, if diagnosed.

Also, he said financial assistance from government was not enough, therefore, other community organisations should make an effort to assist where possible, to give its community members dignified lives.

In her welcome remarks, Kgosi Basadi Seipone commended the SDA church for their support and encouraged them to let love lead in their endeavour to cultivate the spirit of giving among its masses.

Principal social welfare officer from Hukuntsi Sub-district, Ms Fancy Matlhodi said they had about 650 registered destitute in Kang who needs support.

Thus, she lauded SDA for their generosity and pleaded with them to extend the helping hand to others so that they can close the widening gap between societies.

Kang councillor, Mr Kemmonye Makatane said the church had built a good reputation and urged church members to extend a helping hand to other areas saying Kgalagadi District was among the hardest hit areas. ENDS
