27 Jul 2017

Acting District Commissioner of Central District Mr Charles Modise has commended firefighters for putting their lives on the line to save lives.

Speaking at a national inter-fire wellness week at Serowe Sports Complex recently, Mr Modise said that by saving lives firefighters were ensuring a fundamental right to life of those rescued.

He said that government has put up instruments in place to manage raging fires and in the process saving lives.

Though firefighting was a risky job, Mr Modise commended firefighters for their unquestionable commitment towards a noble exercise that extended to even inculcating in communities the best ways to deal with fires and keep safe in case of fires.

Mr Modise said that a successful fire management campaign would culminate in citizens dwelling on prevention of fires than firefighting.

The acting district commissioner found the inter-fire wellness week apt since it served as interlink between fire stations across the country to review their operations and map a way forward on how best they could improve on firefighting and prevention.

He said that it was of paramount importance to engage communities on firefighting on how best they could deal with subject matter fire.

Central District deputy council secretary Mr Robert Lotlole said he expected members of the communities that would be reached by campaigns to benefit immensely from the exercise.

He impressed upon attendants that challenges pertaining to preparations of the event would be addressed.

The meet which started in Gaborone and held there for two years before being taken to Francistown and Orapa is an annual event where firefighters nationwide engage on work related issues such as fire inspections, plan perusals, fire audits inter alia.

It is expected that the event be used to test the level of preparedness of Botswana firefighters in case of disaster. ENDS
