Kerekeng teachers flats experience poor lighting

26 Jul 2017

Assistant Minister of Basic Education, Mr Moiseraele Goya has told Parliament that Kerekeng flats that accommodate Gaborone Senior Secondary School (GSS) teachers experiences poor lighting in its suroundings.

Answering a question in Parliament on July 25, Mr Goya said the Kerekeng Flats were last maintained in 2015 and included painting and fitting of kitchen units in houses saying the lighting would be attended to in 2018/2019 financial year.

He further said GSS encountered an electrical problem at the business block early this year, but the electricity was restored in May 2017.

Mr Goya also said the ministry is aware of a shortage of six classrooms at the school but stated that his ministry intends to convert an old hostel facility into classrooms in 2018/19 financial year. In addition, Mr Goya also mentioned that GSS grounds are owned by the government.

However the issue of intention to gain full ownership does not arise as the Minister of Lands and Housing has approved reservation of Plot 328, Gaborone to be used as sporting grounds for GSS on July 29, 2016.

He also stated that the approval excludes a portion occupied by Tebelopele Voluntary Counselling and Testing Centre.

Member of Parliament for Gaborone Central, Dr Penyo Butale had wanted to know if the ministry intends to put streets lights and improve security at Kerekeng Flats that accommodate GSS teachers.

Dr Butale had also wanted to know when last maintenance was done at the flats.

He also wanted to know steps taken thus far to remedy the lack of electricity at the business block of the school and what the minister was doing to curb the acute shortage of classrooms in GSS.

Dr Butale also asked the minister to brief Parliament on the ownership of the famous GSS grounds.

He further wanted to know whether there is any intention to give full ownership of the school grounds to GSS. ENDS
