Mayor implores Central district to assist resuscitate Phikwe economy

Selebi Phikwe mayor, Mr Molosiwa Molosiwa has implored the Central District Council (CDC) to play a role in resuscitating the economy of Selebi Phikwe and the region.
Mr Moloswa made the call on July 24 when officially opening the Central District Council Finance Committee Capacity Building Workshop scheduled to ends today.
He said Selebi Phikwe and region as a whole faced economic challenges after the closure of BCL Mine which was the main economic contributor in the region.
He mentioned that the town had potential for viable business ventures that would create employment and resuscitate the economy of the region.
He explained that SPEDU was setup to pioneer projects aimed at resuscitating and diversifying the economy of the region such as tourism projects around the Letsibogo, Dikgatlhong, Thune and Lotsane Dam.
He also mentioned that projects in the agriculture and manufacturing field had been earmarked to be setup in the area among other projects.
He called on Central District councillors to market Selebi Phikwe as a destination for business investments.
He acknowledged the Central District for holding a Finance Committee capacity building workshop for councillors, noting that councillors will be instilled with the necessary skills and knowledge needed in financial management, development planning process and be able to render services to the public accordingly.
Meanwhile, when giving a brief on the objectives of the workshop, chairperson of the Central District Council Finance and Development Planning Committee, councillor Onalepelo Kedikilwe indicated that the workshop was held to train and help councillors to understand and implement financial planning statutes such as Accounting Systems Manual and Budget Manuals as used in the Finance and Development Planning process.
He also mentioned that the workshop was held to retrospect on CDC’s financial performance as a way of improving and monitoring management of its financial resources.
Further, he said through the workshop, councillors would understand project and contract management.
“The workshop was also held for councillors to understand the Local Economic Development in view of resuscitating local economic activities,” he said.
In the meantime, prior to the commencement of the workshop, Central District Councillors visited the Letsibogo Dam in Mmadinare.
They also visited SPEDU to get first hand information on the efforts and projects the organisation is pioneering to resuscitate and diversify the economy the region.
Further, the councillors visited the National Processing Plant to appreciate the project and the products and services offered by the organisation. ENDS
