Work hard at school become responsible citizens - Masire

23 Jul 2017

Tebogo Horatious Carter (THC) foundation treated the orphans and vulnerable children of Bontleng to a fun-filled day in an event that was also meant to celebrate the foundation’s founder, Lt Gen. Tebogo Masire’s birthday in Gaborone on July 21.

The children were engaged in different activities for the day that included face paintings and games that allowed them to interact with one another and have fun with their peers, which was the main objective of the day.

Bontleng Village Development Committee (VDC) secretary, Mr John Matsheng expressed gratitude to the THC foundation, who saw it fit to visit his area and celebrate Lt. Gen. Masire’s special day with the under-privileged children of Bontleng.

He said this act would make a huge difference in the lives of the children as they would treasure the memories of the day.

He explained that his area was facing a lot of challenges that affected orphaned and vulnerable children such as lack of social workers, female-headed families and domestic violence.

“Our children are disadvantaged for life due to lack of day care facilities and this is a huge set-back in our efforts to help these children because it delays their early childhood development,” he added.

Mr Matsheng further expressed hope the event was the starting point to greater things to come and that in future partnership between the THC foundation and the VDC would come to life to make a difference in the lives of Bontleng children.

For his part, the Lt Gen. Masire said he was grateful for having to celebrate his birthday with the orphans and vulnerable children of Bontleng because they also deserved to be treated in a special way.

He said although children were faced with a lot of life-challenging issues, they should strive to work hard at school to become responsible and educated citizens who would achieve greater things in life and change their lives for the better.

The THC foundation is a Botswana registered non-profit organisation dedicated to providing support to women and children who are the victims of domestic violence.

The objectives for the foundation include advocating and lobbying for change in attitudes and policies relating to domestic violence as well as providing support through counselling, mentoring, fundraising and referral to relevant support organisations. ENDS
