Private sector should lead agriculture show

25 Jun 2013

Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr Micus Chimbombi says it is time the private sector leads the way by taking over the running of the national agriculture show from the ministry.

Addressing stakeholders and sponsors of the show during a breakfast meeting in Gaborone on July 21, Dr Chimbombi said since the private sector plays a key role in agriculture, they should be at the forefront in the organising and running of the show.

The permanent secretary said they have a new show ground, which he said would bring stakeholders together adding that the ground also has a horse racing space.

Last year’s show organising committee was commended for a successful show which was graced by the South African President, Mr Jacob Zuma.

During the meeting, Spar Supermarket pledged P20 000 for crop production prizes while Agric Sales Botswana and Oliender Company pledged P10 000 each towards the show.

Feed Center Botswana pledged to design wrist bands for entry identification purposes; Dobi Foods pledged groundnuts snacks as well as providing dobi relish for guests during the show.

Other companies such as Barclays Bank Botswana, Botswana Bureau of Standards, Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority and Seed Co promised to work in partnership with the ministry towards the realisation of a successful show.

The 2013 national agriculture show will be held on August 27-31 at the new show ground situated near the Sir Seretse Khama International Airport. ENDS
