Retention of women in sport remains challenge
09 Jul 2017
Co-chairperson of International Working Group on Women and Sport (IWG), Ruth Maphorisa says the organisation is challenged by women who leave sport to pursue other life priorities.
Speaking during Brighton Plus Helsinki declaration 2014 signing on IWG in Gaborone on Friday, Maphorisa said women leave sport to focus on motherhood and other family duties.
“Therefore it is my joy to see netball federations present today to see how to better improve the landscape of women in netball, not only for increased participation but to also retain players,” she added.
She said singing of the declaration would help ensure increased women participation in sport at all levels, roles and functions.
Maphorisa mentioned that planning, designing and managing programmes that equitably met women and girls in community were included in the declaration.
She added that special attention was given to need for childcare provision, safe transport and safety during participation.
Maphorisa encouraged responsible authorities for sport and education of young people to ensure fair opportunities and learning experiences for girls and women.
She congratulated national and regional federations who took steps to provide sustainable sporting culture based on gender.
Maphorisa further added that it showed commitment in ensuring an environment where girls and women could thrive in netball without fear and with support from all perspectives.
The signing was done by International Netball Federation president Molly Rhone and co-chairperson IWG, Maphorisa. ENDS
