Minister of Health and Wellness, Ms Dorcas Makgato has said a combination of physical and spiritual wellness was vital for one to be considered healthy.
Ms Makgato said this when addressing stakeholders at Our Lady Roman Catholic Church youth sponsored walk in Francistown on Saturday.
She stated that every individual should walk and be physically active to keep healthy adding that society should embrace walking on a daily basis.
Ms Makgato further noted that the nation must start moving to eliminate non-communicable diseases through physical activity and exercise.
“For many years, Batswana have had the mentality that health and wellness are achieved through medication and health facilities; but for a healthy nation, we need a combination of physical, mental and spiritual wellness. And by achieving those, there will not be a need to expand clinics and hospitals as the nation will be healthiy,” she said
For his part, Dr Idy Mulenda explained that being physically healthy meant commitment to a well-controlled and adjusted exercising regime such as jogging, exercising and walking in order to preserve bodies from diseases such as obesity, sugar diabetes, sexual impotence and hypertension.
He said, “we are made up of a spirit, with a soul living inside a body. These three components should always be healthy. When our body is healthy, our spirit will be healthy as well.”
Chairperson of the youth committee, Mr Boikanyo Mothubana said they were raising funds for a trip to attend the Mini World Youth Day in Durban from December 6 to 10.
He added that as different catholic churches, they saw it fit to raise funds for children who would be attending the conference.ENDS
