Ministry engages MPs on development fund

15 Jun 2017

Central District Council Secretary, Mr Mokgweetsi Moswete says only a few MPs, whose constituencies fell under the district had approved planned projects to be undertaken through constituency fund.

When answering a question on the status of constituency funded projects at the ongoing council meeting recently, Mr Moswete said MPs had been given the authority to decide on the projects to be undertaken in their constituencies.

There are 17 constituencies under the Central District.

Mr Moswete explained that the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development would meet again with some MPs who had opposed the submitted planned projects on the way forward.

In the meantime, the council secretary told councilors that they were awaiting communication from their parent ministry for authorisation to carry out projects at constituencies where areas MPs had not lodged disapproval to the proposed developments.

To this, some councillors expressed their dissatisfaction at the response and argued that the move by the ministry to have MPs as the ultimate decision makers would present councilors as ‘liars’ to the constituents.

“Altering or changing the agreed on projects would make us look like liars to our people,” said Thabala councillor Mr Kadimo Oremeng. ENDS
