Limkokwing University of Creative Technology has awarded the Presidential Charitable Trust 20 scholarships for students with disabilities.
Announcing the sponsorships at Office of the President on June 14, the university’s head of public relations, Ms Mercy Thebe explained that beneficiaries would commence their studies in the 2017/18 academic year.
She stated that the sponsorships were worth a total amount of P2.88 million and were one hundred per cent sponsorships for tuition fee, adding that beneficiaries would study Bachelor of Arts, Associate Degrees or certificate programmes.
“Limkokwing University has a very strong commitment to widening access to tertiary education in general, and to special needs, orphanage and vulnerable children in particular,” said Ms Thebe.
She added that the university was the largest single provider of tertiary education for special needs students in Botswana, currently with 56 students with disability.
She noted that the 20 scholarships took the amount of scholarships donated by the Limkokwing to the government of Botswana to P3.455 million after 10 similar scholarships were awarded in 2010 worth P585 000.
“Coordinator of People Living with Disability in the Office of the President, Mr Thomas Motingwa said the gesture by Limkokwing would help to empower people with disability with education which would help to improve their quality of life.
“We would like to express our gratitude to Limkokwing University for the good work that they have been doing. Our understating is that if you empower a person with disability, you deliver them from the snare of poverty,” he said.
He added that the university was not only empowering people with disabilities alone, but also assisting government in the sense that people with disability might end up depending on government if they did not get opportunities to access education. ENDS
