School head pleads for donations

12 Jun 2017

As the winter season has hit the door steps of local shores, everyone is forced to arm themselves with warm clothing and everything that can shield them from the bitter cold.

Although it is not a question of choice, no one will escape the cold.

Often, during the winter season, it is the children who are most vulnerable in the cold season who sometimes lack clothing to keep them warm.

Lesirane Primary School in Mogoditshane enrolls more than a thousand pupils every year and the majority of them come from poor backgrounds.

In particular, those students find themselves at the receiving at of the cold winter chills during the winter season.

In an interview recently, Lesirane school head, Ms Birth Dintwe pointed out that her school had about five hundred students who are from underprivileged families.

This is close to half the number of the students that make up Lesirane Primary School pupils.

Ms Dintwe enunciated said it was disheartening for them as teachers to see students coming to school shivering because they did not have school jerseys.

In dealing with such cases, the school head said that she usually allowed the pupils during winter season to wear their home clothes to avoid this kind of situation where students came to school not wearing jerseys in the cold.

“I have no choice but to allow them to wear whatever they like to accommodate them, but in another way, it affects them because they look different from other pupils,” she said.

Ms Dintwe has further indicated that although social workers offered a helping hand, it was not enough as the number of new students kept on rising each year.

The school head has therefore urged the public, especially the corporate world, to assist the school by donating school uniforms to the school. ENDS
