Local boxers in international friendly

A total of 18 boxers from Dscud, DTCB and Prisons boxing clubs will next week travel to South Africa for an international friendly match against Robertsham based Booysen's boxing club in Johannesburg.

Speaking at the launch of the boxers bound for the exciting friendly bouts co-founder of the Dscud boxing club Thuso Khubamang said the initiative was part of their plans to revive the sport locally.

“We would like to promote boxing both amateur and professional. We intend to extend our invite even to those aspiring for fitness. I can say we are happy with our progress despite our three months in existence,” he said.

Khubamang said the received the invite from their SA opponents to stage the fights on the 20th of May and they extended the invite to DTCB and Prisons clubs.

He noted that they were still in talks with Fairground Holding to host the return leg of the friendly during the Consumer Fair.

In his keynote address to the boxers local businessman, Mpho Balopi said he was pleased with the effort made by Dscud by understanding the technique to use one's body to earn a living.

“I encourage you to do such things beneficial to your lives. Explore opportunities in life that you can use to become successful professionals, inspire future generations, and preserve the goodwill of this country. Your contribution will be engraved in the hearts of those you have touched,” he said.

Balopi encouraged the promoters Khubamang and his partner Dusan Cakic to be ambitious in their endeavors and reach levels of astute professionals such as Don King.

Balopi pledged himself to be part of the journey and offered financial support for the intiative.

Botswana Boxing Association's vice president, Orapeleng Mosalakgotla said the boxing fraternity feels privileged when the private sector comes on board. He said the association encouraged international bouts and pleaded with boxers to take advantage so that they may make the grade to national assignments.

The tournament comes in handy for some boxers doing duty at national level such as 64kg champion Kabelo Bagwasi and ladies 60kg hard hitting boxer Keamogetse Kenosi.

Some of the finest boxers travelling to Johannesburg are 69kg boxer Mmusi Tswiige, 60kg fighter Mmoloki Thipe and enterprising female boxer Dineo Moseki. ENDS
