07 May 2017
President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama’s walkabouts on May 6 took him to the streets of Maruapula, Notwane, Tsholofelo and Boikhutso wards where he was met with appreciation from residents.
Residents of the four wards expressed gratitude for the President’s interaction with ordinary people on the streets, which they said offered them an opportunity to see him live and share light moments with them.
The President was met with pleas for job opportunities by residents who also complained that government’s poverty eradication programmes and other schemes aimed to empower them were yet to come to fruition.
Some residents complained that they had partially received packages under the Poverty Eradication Programme dating as far back as 2012, while some said they were still waiting for the packages especially those for bakery and cooking.
At Maruapula, some residents complained of waterlogging homesteads due to uncontrollable water that flooded the streets during rains due to the absence of proper storm water drainage system.
The youth of Maruapula pleaded for the grading of a football pitch to be used by the youth who resided in the ward.
President Khama donated them a football kit and some balls.
Still at Maruapula, President Khama checked an ailing elderly woman who is home-bound and promised that she would be assisted with aiding walking sticks.
At Tsholefelo Ward, residents who benefitted from Poverty Eradication Programme complained about market to sell their trees and chickens, citing that the market for consumer shops was dominated by business giants with the same produce.
President Khama also interacted with a youth at Notwane ward who said she was home-bound because of the disability she incurred after a road accident. ENDS
