Speaking in an interview at the Sir Seretse Khama Airport upon his arrival on April 24, Mr Masisi stated that the meeting brought together African leaders, prominent scholars, civil society and professionals in security.
The Vice President said the meeting was held every year to discuss issues of security in Africa and this year it was held under the theme ‘Natural resource governance.’
Mr Masisi indicated that Botswana was cited as an epitome of robust security by a scholar from Ivory Coast University who won the essay competition at the assembly.
The Tana Forum University Essay Competition is entered by Masters or PhD students from the Social Science, Humanities, Political Science and International Relations from all African universities.
He further highlighted that Botswana was also cited as a country with good governance in managing natural resources for the benefit of her citizens.
“For Botswana to be cited as an example of good governance motivates us so that we work hard to improve our status,” he added.
The Vice President stated that at this forum, he conversed with former Nigerian President, Mr Olusegun Obasanjo and former South African President, Mr Thabo Mbeki.
He noted that they talked about how leadership in Africa could be strengthened and settled and the need to empower leaders from opposition and ruling parties.
Mr Masisi indicated that some of the former African presidents who attended the conference shared lessons and examples on what future leaders should learn from them.
Furthermore, he noted that having been assigned by President Khama to represent Botswana at the meeting, he would be briefing him on the trip and the outcomes and recommendations.
He stated that the prime minister of Ethiopia, Mr Hailemariam Desalegn invited them to the City of Aksum in Northern Ethiopia to learn about its rich history. ENDS
