Minister of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology, Dr Alfred Madigele has paid tribute to Sathya Sai Baba Free Medical Clinic that offers free medical services to the public.
Speaking during the kick-starting of the community outreach programme of the clinic on Sunday, Minister Madigele commended the medical and non-medical volunteers for their commitment to the free service they provided to the public.
The community outreach programme offered under the auspices of the Sathya Sai Central Trust of Botswana has for the last 10 years been providing medical services to the public and has now extended their services to reach members of the public outside Gaborone.
Dr Madigele said the clinic currently has over 20 000 patient records who have benefitted from free medical services which include general medical services, dental services and eye care services.
He said consultations, treatment, medication and spectacles were also given to patients for free.
He said apart from free medical services, the clinic conducts activities such as bi-annual blood donation camps.
The Sathya Sai Baba Free Medical Clinic also conducts Sai student vision support programme on a yearly basis for 10 public schools to improve vision among students and has so far helped 412 students of which 265 were provided with spectacles to enhance their vision.
The clinic has a support of 21 medical, three translators and 15 non-medical volunteers.
The chairperson of the Sathya Sai Central Trust of Botswana, Dr Sunil Kadiyala said the goal of the outreach programme was to take care of people who do not have the accessibility to visit the clinic in Gaborone. He said the medical team would be conducting mobile health camps in selected villages at regular intervals.
“During these camps, consultation, good advice and medicines would be provided to patients free of cost by a team of experienced doctors and trained volunteers,” he said.
He further thanked the CEO of Choppies Botswana Group of Companies, Mr Ramachandran Ottapath who donated through the Boitumelo Foundation, two specialised machines for smooth examination of patients. end
