17 Apr 2017

Botswana Public Employees Union (BOPEU) donated P50 000 to Molefi Senior Secondary School Special Education Unit recently.

Handing over the cheque, BOPEU leader, Ms Masego Mogwera said they decided to extend a helping hand to the school in recognition of the challenges it currently faced at its special education unit.

Ms Mogwera said through their social responsibility fund they decided to assist the students to improve their grades.

She mentioned that Molefi Senior Secondary School provided an essential help of disseminating knowledge and empowering young people to become responsible leaders and community builders of tomorrow.

The school offered education and hope to children who are visually impaired through innovative and interactive methods.

“I hope that the donation will go a long way towards assisting the school to continue giving hope to our young people and I hope that this gesture will be the beginning of a life-long relationship between Molefhi School and BOPEU,” said Ms Mogwera.

She indicated that through the adopt-a-school initiative, they have since adopted Lotsane Senior Secondary School from 2012, with the target to improve their results and sponsored students who scored 40 points and above.
BOPEU leader further said they awarded best performing students and took them on an outing as a way of encouraging them to continue doing better.

The school enrolment is 1 660, of which 31 are visually impaired students.

For his part, the school head, Mr Francis Semathane applauded the leadership of BOPEU and said he believed their support would help the school to produce better results.

The school head noted that they had shortage of special education equipment, which made it difficult to come up with better results, adding that the equipment was expensive.

Mr Semathane said for the past five years, they had experienced poor results, but experienced an increase of 3.33 per cent in 2016 to attain a 27.86 per cent overall pass.

He reiterated that he believed the donation would help them reach their goal.

Moreover, he promised the leadership of BOPEU that they would continue with hard work through the utilisation of available resources.

Giving a word of encouragement, Kgosi Time Pilane thanked BOPEU leadership for their generous gesture and implored the parents to work hand in hand with teachers as this would help the students to work hard and produce better results.

He emphasised the importance of education, saying ‘it is the key to success and it gives one a chance to live a better life.’ BOPA
