Organisations show care for elderly

12 Apr 2017

Elderly people have been described as the core and the host of culture.

This was said by The Word Synagogue Church executive committee chairperson Mr Decreanor Mangubo at Gakuto recently.

The celebration was the third anniversary in which the church and Unique Association of Botswana have been taking care of the elderly people in Gakuto.

Mr Mangubo said The Word Synagogue Church found it fit to take care of the elderly people in Gakuto where they are based as a way of appreciating them and making them feel they are part of the changing society.

He said in most of the cases, activities taking place around the community do not cater for them because of the changing world and as a result, elderly people feel out of place and abandoned.

For her part, the Unique Association chairperson Ms Maggie Mathumo said her organisation that takes care of the elderly people in Gakuto has collaborated with The Word Synagogue Church as they had one vision of helping the grown-ups.

She said on monthly basis as the elderly people queue at the BotswanaPost for their allowances, they give them some food to eat as they spend a lot of time there without food.

“Previously, we sourced out some chairs for them and a company called Point Motors in Mogoditshane donated to us 50 chairs for use by these elderly people at the BotswanaPost instead of standing up for a long time”, she said.

Ms Mathumo also said they do house to house visits on daily basis to check on how those elderly people were doing. ENDS
