Council undertakes street name exercise

12 Apr 2017

The Boteti Sub-district council, through the physical planning and council roads division, is undertaking a street naming exercise in Letlhakane.

Once complete, the process will ensure that all streets in the village are properly named and roads signs put in place for easy identification and directional purposes.

According to Boteti Sub-district council chairperson, Mr Solomon Cornelius properly named and labelled roads and streets are important during policing and emergency services.

He said the sub-district council was engaged in consultations with stakeholders before the commencement and implementation of the exercise.

He said the consultations were also meant to sensitise residents about the process and to seek their views on how best to conduct the process as well as to take on board their suggested names.

“Once complete in Letlhakane, the street naming exercise will be rolled out to other villages in the sub district,” he said.

He said the sub-district council was also in the process of removing all illegal sign boards in and around Letlhakane following the decision made in November 2016.

“A consultative meeting towards implementation of that council resolution took place earlier this year and all the concerned illegal signboards owners were given a two months grace period up to end of March 2017 to remove their signs boards,” he said.

He said if those concerned do not comply, the council would remove the boards and pass the removal costs to the concerned parties.

He also said in order to guide and shape future developmental growth of the region, the Boteti Sub-district council in conjunction with sub land boards in the region was in the process of preparing detailed layouts plans for the development of Moremaoto, Rakops, Motopi, Xhumo and Khumaga.

Letlhakane was declared a planning area a few years ago and all land transactions within the planning area are governed by the provisions of the Town & Country Planning Act which is administered by the Boteti Sub-district council.

Declaration of a village as a planning area is done for villages that have development plans and Letlhakane is the only village in sub-district which has such a plan which will run until 2031. ENDS
