Masisi urges WUC to up game

10 Apr 2017

Vice President, Mr Mokgweetsi Masisi has urged Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) to come up with modalities to enhance efficiency in water provision across the nation.

Mr Masisi, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Moshupa/Manyana constituency, said this during a meeting he addressed in Moshupa on April 10.

He raised concern that the constituency has been plagued by water shortage for some time and urged the coorporation to up its game.

Mr Masisi also advised WUC to come up with creative ways to encourage Batswana to conserve water and to develop strategies for water harvesting, utilisation and quality standardisations.

“Develop a maintenance plan for cleaning the gutters in your houses and teach people how to do that during community service days,” he said.

The Moshupa/Manyana MP also urged WUC to resolve the water shortage complications at Pitseng, adding that the village has been experiencing water shortages for a month.

Mr Masisi said he was aware of challenges such as shortage of resources by WUC, and urged councillors to also appreciate the challenges.

For his part, WUC chief executive officer, Mr Mmetla Masire conceded that water provision across the constituency was not satisfactory.

He said the situation was compounded by the drying up of some boreholes, and that the Moshupa water treatment plant has also collapsed.

However, he noted that his company bowsed water across Moshupa while awaiting funds to equip four boreholes they have drilled around Selokolela.

He said the boreholes would augment water supply around Moshupa.

Nonetheless, he said their efforts were undermined by water likages as a result of dilapidated water infrastracture.

He noted that 38 per cent of the water was lost through likages, adding that P215 million was needed for the new water infrastracture project. ENDS
