Namibia will not compete in Mascom horse race

09 Apr 2017

Namibia will not compete in the Mascom Derby horse race schedule for the Easter Holidays at Shashe Horse race due to late registration.

Namibia has been participating in the event since 2012 but this time, locals will be competing with Lesotho in the race which attracts thousands from across the country.

Chief organiser, Charlie Mabua confirmed in an interview that Namibia would not take part this year as they failed to register on time due to circumstances in their country.

He said although they showed interest to compete, it was unfortunate because by the time they were ready to register, it was already late and all races fully booked.

Other countries like South Africa and Zimbabwe were reported to have shown interest too but could not be accommodated due to shortage of facilities.

Mabua said about 120 horses, 18 of which are from Lesotho, were expected to compete in 11 races.

The event would feature two categories being Tswana and thorough breed while races would range from 800 to 24 000 metres.

April 15 would be the day to tell whether Batswana would have an easy path given their numbers.

There had been reports that Batswana this time would be competing with quality breeds in their quest to outdo competitors.

Mabua said they ensured that horses from Botswana dominate the race because they were the host adding that horses from as far as Barolong Farms, Tuli Block, Central region, Jwaneng, Ghanzi, Maun, Gaborone and Charleshill were expected to take part.

“This year we did not want the foreigners to outnumber the locals because they are the host hence they registered in large numbers,” he added.

Asked about the preparations, Mabua was quick to note that they were almost complete adding that the race track and other logistics were in place.

He said horses would start arriving from Monday.

The main sponsor, Mascom Wireless Company he said, increased the prize money explaining that the event would be divided into two distance races.

Other sponsors are Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture.

Mabua appealed to the public to continue supporting the event for it to grow and cautioned them to display good behaviour.

Khuduga HD Media Company director, Peter Gathola confirmed in an interview that the race would broadcast live on Khuduga HD adding that they would team up with Botswana Television. ENDS
