Town council approves community project proposals

Selebi Phikwe Town Council approved LG 1109 community project proposals in Selebi Phikwe East and West constituencies.
The projects will be financed through the Community Development Programme Fund where every constituency will be receiving P10 million to bring developments to their area.
The proposal was presented to the full council meeting recently where councillors endorsed the projects proposals.  
Ms Queen Goepamang who is the principal economic planner at SPTC said the proposals in  Selebi Phikwe East constituency included maintenance of school facilities at Boitshoko and Botshabelo Primary Schools and maintenance of a kgotla shelter at Ikageleng Customary Court while the construction of a kgotla shelter will take place at Botshabelo Customary Court. Further Ms Goepamang noted that general maintenance of street lights and the maintenance and electrification of market stalls has been included in the plan.
The economic planner went on to state that gravelling and rehabilitation of some roads, bridges and culverts have also made part of the project proposals.
She said in Selebi Phikwe West constituency maintenance of toilets at Phikwe and Boswelakgomo Primary Schools has been included in the approved project proposal as well as maintenance of street lights, rehabilitation of a road bridge and culverts.
She said reconstruction of road culvert and construction of storm water drainage systems in some parts of the constituency will also be funded through Community Development Programme Fund.
She said the erection of shades and installation of spectator chairs and running track at Selebi Phikwe stadium  have also been included in the approved proposals where the cost will be shared by the Selebi Phikwe west and east constituencies.
However she stated that the project is subject to technical assessment.
Meanwhile councillor for Botshabelo East Mr Kgakgamatso Ramatlopi said that the council must monitor and coordinate the implementation of the projects accordingly and make it a point that the projects are done according to specifications, time and budget.
Councillor for Leseding Ms Phemelo Nthwane supported by other councillors urged the council to consider giving construction companies based in Selebi Phikwe especially those directed by youth and women priority to pursue the projects.
She said the move to empower local companies especially those that are facing challenges after the closure of BCL Mine which was the main economic contributor in the mining town.
For his part town clerk Mr Godimo Garegope acknowledged councillors statements and requests and explained that Selebi Phikwe companies will be given priority if only they meet the requirements, standards and comply with the project tender documents to pursue the projects.
He also mentioned that the implementation of the community development projects will be monitored by the relevant authorities in the council to make sure that the projects are completed accordingly. ENDS
