Lack of exercise contributes to illnesses

17 Jun 2013

Lack of involvement in sport has been identified as one of the factors that expose people to illness.

Colonel Mbakiso Mukokomani said this at the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) 2 Infantry Brigade wellness day in Donga on June 16.

Col Mukokomani said the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other bodies were concerned that lack of involvement in sport contributed to obesity in children and lowered life span.

He noted that some illnesses could be prevented by engaging in sports and incorporating activities such as walking into daily activities. Col Mukokomani said involvement in sporting activities could result in healthier lives and better functioning of the mind, body and soul.

“It is a point of sound medical truth that a proper lifestyle is premised on a balance of the physical, cognitive and conative,” he said.

He said the objective of the day was not only to allow for interaction between the community and the BDF in Francistown through games, but also to help in the fulfillment of the Vision 2016 pillar of a compassionate, just and caring nation with emphasis on improving one’s health status.

Col Mukokomani encouraged women in the garrison to consider participating in the BDF Women’s Club activities as it was designed as a model for furthering their interests towards making their family lives less strenuous.

He said the BDF had the welfare of its community at heart as evidenced by establishment of the chaplains and the HIV/AIDS coordinator offices that offered counselling for families and assistance in HIV testing and voluntary safe male circumcision (SMC).

He thanked the Francistown business community for sponsoring the day and appreciated members of the BDF and the community for responding positively towards making the day a success.

Captain Bokang Gaobotse said the event also accorded those who attended an opportunity to be screened for diabetes, Tuberculosis, HIV, hypertension, tooth decay and other ailments.

Those who got first positions in the egg and spoon race, sack race, and orange race won themselves weekend vouchers for two at Adansonia Hotel.
