Escalating TB cases worry magistrate
27 Mar 2017
Serowe principal magistrate, Mr Thebeetsile Mulalu has expressed concern at escalating numbers of Tuberculosis (TB) cases at the Serowe District Health Management area.
Addressing residents during a TB day commemoration held at Marulamantsi ward, March 24, Mr Mulalo attributed the TB figures to its relation with HIV/AIDS.
Magistrate Mulalo, who conceded that TB scourge was a national concern worthy of commemorating, warned that HIV/AIDS patients were highly likely to be affected by the opportunist TB.
He said youth who engage in alcohol and drugs were at risk of contracting TB because they do not have time to adhere to health advices.
Mr Mulalu said despite some challenges they face in curbing the disease, the health management team is making efforts to sensitise the public on the dangers posed by the disease in their lives.
Consequently, the principal magistrate challenged all to fight the epidemic.
He said they would continue disseminating information to people in different ways, citing post cards, newspapers and workshops among others.
For her part, head of preventative services, Dr Onkgopotse Oduetse said they are spreading the message to people in order to come up with solutions to prevent the increasing number of TB patients.
She said their aim is also to attain a zero TB infection.
She also admitted to shortage of health facilities at Marulamantsi ward, a factor she cited could hinder residents from accessing relevant assistance.
However, Dr Oduetse said she was working on community outreach endeavour of taking services to people.
Dr Oduetse urged the public to frequently visit health facilities to make enquiries and get information about TB. ENDS
