Chairperson corrects mistake

23 Mar 2017

Information passed to parents to purchase chairs for their children was a mistake and should not have happened, Ghanzi East Sub-district Council chairperson, Ms Dineo Swartz says.

Briefing the sub council recently, Ms Swartz explained that oversubscribed schools in the township resulted in some schools running short of desks and chairs for pupils.

“Let me take this opportunity to correct that mistake. That should not have happened,” the chairperson stated.

She said the council was on top of the situation to ensure that there was  a conducive  environment  for learning, adding that chairs and desks have been collected from the less subscribed schools and made available where needed.

She also added that 163 chairs were procured and delivered to Kabakae Primary School.

Earlier, Ms Swartz had expressed concern about the decline of academic performance at primary schools in her region.

“We have noted that the performance has dropped by 3 per cent from 49.2 per cent in 2015 to 46 per cent in 2016.”

She noted that the  performance decline was also experienced from 2014 where it was at 51 per cent.

She said Qabo Primary School suffered the biggest drop from 76 per cent in 2015 to 23 per cent in 2016.

She called on all stakeholders to intensify efforts to improve the results.

Regarding the initiative of transporting pupils to schools that was introduced, she said P125 000 was disbursed for the procurement of donkey carts.

She added that five donkey carts had been procured and sent to Grootlaagte, Qabo, West Hanahai, East Hanahai and New Xade. ENDS
