20 Mar 2017

Botswana Railways official says employee’s recognition is important because it goes a long way in boosting morale and a productive workforce.

BR finance and administration general manager, Mr Mao Segage made the emphasis at the Mahalapye Sub -district employee performance awards ceremony in Mahalapye on March 17 and advised supervisors on their responsibility to monitor and mentor supervisees and accordingly reward them.

He said Mahalapye Sub-district had always been at the forefront in recognising and celebrating employee performance since 2013, and has so far awarded a total of 286 employees since the commencement of the reward system.

He noted that this year, a total of 54 employees were awarded in various categories such as long service, good conduct and best performing division.

He said the implication of this practice was shown by reduction in the number of complaints raised during staff meetings and the sacrifice employees were willing to offer to improve the working environment.

Therefore, Mr Segage applauded the sub-district, sub-council chairperson, councillors, council secretary, and the district commissioner for a commendable commitment in responding to staff welfare issues.

Further, he commended Mahalapye sub-district for other notable achievements, which included completion of various projects such as 18 destitute houses and 13 RADP houses.

He said in an effort to improve performance in the public sector, government had come up with various initiatives which included among others, public service day, facilitation of access to knowledge by all staff through installation of internet services and promoting training and research.

Mr Segage therefore congratulated all those who received awards and encouraged them to continue with the good work and keep the good standards.

He also encouraged those who did not receive awards not to despair but work harder.

The awards were held under the theme: "Celebrating success, a gateway breakthrough in service delivery."

The theme, he said resonated well with the Central District Council mission and vision to deliver effective governance, thus ensuring effective and functional local structures.

For his part, Mahalapye Sub-district council chairperson, Mr Tassman Cebani said the ceremony served as an appreciation and recognition of selfless contributions made by employees to the public service.

Mr Cebani said all the efforts displayed by employees stood as testimony and a benchmark for others to emulate. ENDS
