Government appreciates UN Women support - Batshu
20 Mar 2017
Minister of Nationality, Immigration and Gender Affairs, Mr Edwin Batshu has appreciated the support that the country enjoys from the United Nations (UN) agencies, particularly the UN Women.
Speaking to UN Women at the ongoing 61 Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW61) in New York, Minister Batshu said the financial and technical support rendered to the SADC region by UN Women during the negotiations of the resolution on Women, The Girl Child and HIV/AIDS, which Botswana led as the SADC chair could not go unnoticed.
He said he was delighted that the UN Women support to Botswana had resulted in adoption by consensus of the UN Resolution 60/2, which was a big milestone not only for the SADC region but the African continent at large.
Following the opening of the UN Women office in Botswana last year, the minister said they have commenced the planning on gender policy implementation, key to this being capacity building of the national gender machinery and the National Gender Commission.
The minister emphasised that the office has been facilitative and pledged Botswana’s continued support to its priorities. ENDS
