The house to house visits and community mobilisation strategy is doing well in the recruitment of adult learners in the Shakawe area, Department of Out-of-School Education (DOSET) has revealed.
Speaking in a recent interview, DOSET's senior adult education officer, Ms Mpho Rutang said the mobilisation was conducted by the adult education teachers engaged in various villages.
She said the number of learners had increased dramatically since March this year and it was expected to rise because of the strategy that their office had adopted. The strategy, which involved addressing kgotla meetings, was well supported by dikgosi.
In March alone, 185 new learners registered, while in April and May there were 206 and 256 respectively. She explained that their office in Shakawe had a catchment area of about 10 villages, among them, Sekondomboro, Gani, Ngarange, Mohembo west, Tombera and Samochima.
There were over 14 adult teachers responsible for each of the villages and with the introduction of back to school initiative, she said, a lot of prospective learners had made enquires on how to enroll, the education officer said.
However, if their number increased, there new classes could be introduced to cater for them, Ms Rutang said. “We will help learners who want to upgrade their reading and writing skills,” Ms Rutang said, adding that the department had a mandate to implement and achieve the recommendations of the 1994 Revised National Policy on Education (RNPE).
She appealed to men to register for the programme as well, saying men were still lagging behind. Furthermore, she explained that the lack of electricity and transport had a negative impact on service delivery as it was difficult for them to reach to remote places such as Sekondomboro. Ms Rutang advised the Shakawe and surrounding areas to utilise the services offered to improve their lives. ends
