The Chokandiwala family in Mochudi has donated over 200 spectacle frames to Mochudi community.
Speaking to BOPA recently, a family representative Mr Ishmael Chokandiwala said they started their giving gesture last November and have seen more people coming fourth to collect spectacle frames which he said cost around P400 to P500 each.
Mr Chokandiwala said they started the project after the realisation that some people had sight conditions and could not afford spectacles hence they decided to give free frames to help cut the cost of getting full spectacles.
He however said the number of people also encouraged them to do more and they were currently in talks with a private ophthalmologist in Molepolole to help them in testing and prescribing lenses for eye patients in a tour they intended to undertake in the whole of Kgatleng District and give full spectacles in the process.
He further said they had no age restrictions in their project as they understood that money could be a challenge toeveryone and said a number of middle aged females and teenagers had proved to be the ones collecting frames more than males and adults and have received a number of positive feedback.
“We first had talks with DRMH eye clinic department but our times clashed and couldn’t reach an agreement so we decided to start. We were eager to start because in most instances procrastination kills the spark of your ambition but we get referrals from them and we intend to go back to them because we really want to contribute to our community and we need their guidance as the major stakeholder,” Mr Chokandiwala said.
Mr Chokandiwala also advised that people should engage in charity works and participate in community building to meet the government half way for a better Botswana.
Meanwhile, DRMH’s Dr Joseph Mosate of eye clinic department said they applaud the Chokandiwala family as their eagerness is nothing but a gesture to be admired and imitated by those who have enough to share with the rest. ENDS
